Kirchheim, October 29, 2025 – Generative AI systems create a natural interface for human communication through the use of language and text. Many users encounter these systems using the same benchmarks and expectations that they know from interactions with other people. But it is just this intuitive approach and apparent familiarity that hides risks – especially if the technological fundamentals and possible implications of AI are not clear.

To be able to evaluate generative AI – and artificial intelligence as a whole – a broad and in-depth analysis of the topic is needed. This includes political, technological, ethical, philosophical, social and economic perspectives. Only through a multifaceted approach can the potentials and risks of AI be estimated.

Comprehensive, Transdisciplinary Overview

The new specialist book "Künstliche Intelligenz und Wir"  ("Artificial Intelligence and Us") (Springer Nature, Open Access) offers for the first time a comprehensive, transdisciplinary overview of the current state, future developments and social impacts of AI. Published by the Federation of German Scientists (Vereinigung Deutscher Wissenschaftler e. V., VDW) in cooperation with genua GmbH, a company of the Bundesdruckerei Group, the publication unites the expertise of 32 leading authors from science and industry

The book covers everything from technical fundamentals to energy-efficient AI, quantum computing and trustworthy systems and even geopolitical and ethical topics. It discusses disruptive economic changes as well as security policy aspects and calls for a critical as well as constructive approach – transcending short-sighted enthusiasm for technology or debilitating overregulation.

"With the book, we hope to convey not only a deeper understanding of the technologies behind AI but also provide impetus for the ethical and social issues that will be with us in the coming years," emphasizes Matthias Ochs, Managing Director of genua GmbH, in his foreword.

genua financed the publication funding of the 568 page work. It is thereby available as a free e-book on Open Access and can be used by researchers, students, teachers, entrepreneurs, and business owners as well as developers worldwide. In just the first two weeks after publication, the Springer Nature publishing company recorded more than 110,000 accesses – emphasizing the high relevance and topicality of the issues covered in the book.

Expertise From Research, Instruction and Industry Combined

The authors include experts from IT security specialist genua and other members of the Bundesdruckerei Group, the technology company of the German federal government. They play a significant role in shaping the book with sound and practically oriented articles, such as on AI fundamentals and large language models.

Two experts from Bundesdruckerei GmbH address trustworthy and sovereign AI use: Dr. Kim Nguyen, Senior Vice President Innovations, and Carmen Dencker, Innovation Senior Data Scientist. "The trustworthiness of technology and, thus, of AI as well is a multi-layered construct based on capability, integrity and goodwill. In addition to technical aspects, ethical values are also addressed, especially in the area of goodwill. We have the opportunity here to establish a European ecosystem of trust – a key component of digital sovereignty," says Nguyen.

"Only rarely do such first-class authors from a wide range of disciplines jointly consider how artificial intelligence can further develop in a philanthropic and future-proof manner and what is necessary so that German science and industry can expand their global market position," says publisher Frank Schmiedchen, coordinator of the study groups of the Federation of German Scientists.

With 65 illustrations, 50 of which are in color, and compact chapter introductions, "Künstliche Intelligenz und Wir"  ("Artificial Intelligence and Us") provides a sound knowledge base – ideal for use in study, research and practice.
